The honeymoon period is an interesting phenomenon. For those wondering what it is, it is a period following an initial type 1 diabetes diagnosis where you can have near normal blood sugar levels with minimal, or sometimes no, insulin.

I’ve luckily been able to be in this period for about two full years (I’m only short two months!) but lately, it seems that it’s taking more and more insulin to remain in range. This could also be the result of sitting sedentary for my job for several hours a day. Or maybe because I have lapsed into eating a less healthy, more convenient diet in an effort to be more sociable? Or celebrating a little too much? Or all of the above?

Getting sufficient rest, maintaining a healthy diet, and limiting alcohol consumption are key to keeping a low A1C. Without these things in place, you stand to gain weight (like I have haha) which makes your task a ton more difficult. My consistent 119 mg/dl average has now ballooned to a 145 mg/dl, still under 7 A1C (which is an average of 154 mg/dl) but edging near the top. So for the next two weeks, it’s back on the fitness train.

Will it work? Only one way to find out! I’ll have an update in the future.

Also, it’s interesting to note, that in a clinical study patients were able to prolong their honeymoon periods by taking D3 supplements. Gluten free diets were also shown to be beneficial for this.

Update: Cutting back and exercising are working! It’s wild how convenient, unhealthy eating and low levels of exercise can compound. A few pounds down can really make a difference. It all starts with taking the first step. Not a 100% back to where I was (132 mg/dl average) but on the right track. Onward and upward! Or downward…
