Who doesn’t love a good party with some tasty adult beverages and great friends? I can definitely say I do as much as or more than the next guy.

Being fairly sociable, I find myself in that setting quite a bit. So much so that I started wondering about if I was making a good decision by continuing to partake in the same level of festivities my non-diabetic friends do. To give myself a break, and also because I love a good challenge, I quit drinking for 90 days to monitor the results.

The first 30 days didn’t really see much of a difference in my glucose readings. In fact, I was starting to question if I had made the right choice since nothing was happening. I slept a little better and my bank account was a fan, but really nothing significant.

Not sure if the world just wanted to prove me wrong or it’s just the textbook case of keeping going despite wanting to give up then eventually getting what you want through persistence, but I started getting significantly better numbers without any change in exercise or diet other than not drinking shortly after day 30. My A1C was a 6.5 at the start of this. According to my CGM, it was down to 6.2 on the current trend. Nice.

The next 30 days saw averages even better than before, a number physical improvements and healthy weight loss. The fat was turning into muscle with very minimal exercise. A1C is now down to 6.0 and insulin usage down to just one dose of long acting insulin before bedtime.

After the 90 days was up, I encountered a short period of elevated glucose levels which somehow also happens to me every three months regardless of diet or activity level. No idea why it happens but I’m guessing it corresponds with a change in the weather or maybe end of quarter stress at work. Moderation is definitely the key here as I have been able to have an occasional night out and maintain the results. My skin has improved, I look and feel younger, even my speech has improved.

If you have diabetes and want to see some dramatic improvements with quite literally doing almost nothing, I recommend the cleanse and moderation. A1C now estimated at 5.9. I wonder what the next 90 days will bring? Have you had a similar experience?
